Identity thieves obtain important pieces of your information, such as your social security number and/or your driver's license number.

Identity theft can start easily with lost or stolen wallets, swiped mail, computer virus, spyware, phishing emails, a scam, or paper documents thrown out by you. These crimes vary widely, and may include check fraud, credit card fraud, financial identity theft, criminal identity theft, and identity fraud.

How will you know if you have become a victim of identity theft? Believe me you will know if you indeed have become a victim. I knew right away that I was a victim of ID theft.
If you have noticed some unexplained charges and withdrawals from your bank and other financial accounts. A credit card application has been denied for no apparent reason, debt collectors begin calling you about accounts, merchandise, and services that you did not buy. If you have online accounts such as Ebay or Paypal and you start getting emails about purchases you did not purchase. You will know it if you become a victim.

Your computer can be a jackpot of personal data to an
identity thief. To protect yourself and your computer against identity theft consider taking these steps:

1.
Virus Protection

You need to update your virus protection software frequently. You should have your virus protection software to update automatically. If it not set up to do this, you can go under your settings, and select the option to update automatically.

2. Never store your passwords in your computer

This is how I became a victim of identity theft. I stored all my passwords for all my pass worded websites I used, such as Ebay, Paypal, Affiliate websites, Etc. I also stored my passwords in my documents on my computer.

3. Do not open any files unless you know who sent it

If you get an email or file from a stranger, do not click on any of the links, and never download anything that was sent to you.

4. Use A
Firewall

Install a firewall on your computer if you don't have one. This is especially important if you have a high speed internet connection (cable or DSL) because you are connected to the internet 24 hours a day.

As with any crime, you can not entirely control whether you will become a victim, but you can take steps to minimize your risk by remaining careful and by minimizing outside access to your personal information.
